Bridge St Leisure Centre

In 2012 Leominster Community Solar Cooperative (LCSC ) installed a community funded 49kW solar array on the  Bridge Street Sports Centre in Leominster, generating clean, green electricity for the centre.  This was a first for Herefordshire as a wholly community owned renewable energy project and one of the largest solar roofs in the county. With 94 members in co-op, it was one of the very first community solar roofs in the UK.

The building has a curved roof that is south-east facing and generates in the region of 42,000kWh a year and saving the equivalent of approximately 22.5 tonnes of CO2. The Leisure Centre services are provided by Halo Leisure, a locally based social enterprise that operate on behalf of Herefordshire County Council. Their electricity consumption outstrips what the panels will be able to produce, even in the height of summer, meaning that virtually all of the solar electricity generated is used on site – reducing the sports centre’s consumption of grid electricity. At times when this is not the case, electricity from the panels is fed directly into the grid, this is metered and attracts a small income for all the electricity produced, as well as the Feed in Tariff subsidy.

In exchange for hosting the solar roof, Halo receive a discounted price for the electricity, and they have greater price security than when buying on the open market. In addition, Halo see this as an integral next step in their plan to reduce their carbon emissions, which they committed to doing at all of their Herefordshire sites.

In 2025 LCSC merged with Big Solar Co-op. LCSC had been looking for a succession plan for the co-op and the members voted for a Transfer of Engagements, with LCSC members becoming Big Solar Co-op members and the solar array moving to being owned and managed by Big Solar Co-op.
